Local Involvement

This is how we roll:

"Going green" is easy to say and a convenient label to affix to any number of enterprises in today's society. Anyone can wave the green banner. It's much more difficult to build a business that can truly hoist that flag. Being green isn't easy. We know that because we've walked the walk for green, not just talked the green talk.

Our efforts toward ecologically-responsible environmental stewardship - not just on a local level but our commitment to the global community - have been substantial:

  • By participating in the Connecticut Clean Choice Program, which allows companies to purchase energy from renewable sources, we reduce the impact our business has on the environment.
  • We are helping reduce our dependence on foreign oil by converting our diesel delivery trucks to run on Biodiesel, a domestically-produced, renewable and biodegradable fuel. Biodiesel is cleaner burning, reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines up to 90 percent. Not only are our delivery trucks going greener, our company vans soon will too: as each van comes up for replacement we will replace it with a vehicle that will use Biodiesel.
  • Just like at home, we conserve at the workplace. We have switched to compact fluorescent light bulbs; we have installed motion detectors to save on lights; we turn our computers off at night and switch from screen savers to hibernate mode; we have created an on-site recycling program for paper, metal and plastic.
  • We're out there doing our part. We teamed up with United Technologies to help make the 2007 Hartford Marathon one of the greenest marathons in the country. UTC developed a water fountain with 40 spouts and we supplied purified water and a 2,500 gallon tank. Our collaboration eliminated the need for more than 20,000 plastic water bottles and paper cups typically found at the end of the race.
